In response to the upheaval of normal life that is COVID-19, state Rep. Jane Powdrell-Culbert (R-Corrales) is asking for an extension of tax payments.

According to NM House GOP,  Powdrell-Culbert sent a letter to Gov. Lujan Grisham, petitioning for support of small businesses and asking for a three-month tax deferral for withheld taxes and gross receipt taxes (GRT).

While a previous extension until July 25 had been issued by the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department for small businesses, Powdrell-Culbert believes that the extension would not truly help to support small businesses impacted by COVID-19.

Powdrell-Culbert said that it is the job of the state government to support their residents in this time of need.

“New Mexicans are counting on our government to help them through this crisis, if our government can carry some of that burden then we must,” Powdrell-Culbert said. “As New Mexicans continue to stay home and wrap their minds around this crisis, I am committed to doing all that I can to bring them some peace of mind as we pick up and move forward to a better tomorrow.”

In her letter, Powdrell-Culbert asked that the small business community be given the opportunity to catch up on their 2020 calendar year GRT by extending the deadline even later.

Under her proposal, the first quarter payment would be extended to July 25, the second quarter payment extended to Oct. 25, and the third and fourth quarter payments would be extended until Jan. 25, 2021.

Powdrell-Culbert believes that by deferring these quarterly payments,  small businesses will have the chance to rebuild much of what has been lost through the economic standstill of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Powdrell-Culbert has been a representative since 2003. She is a standing committee member to the House Commerce & Economic Development Committee and the House Transportation, Public Works & Capital Improvements Committee.
