Armed Man Exchange Gunfire at Walmart Saturday Morning

Responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle at the Walmart store at 901 Unser early Saturday, Rio Rancho Police officers found themselves in a dangerous shootout.

Police responded at 6:25 a.m. to the call, said Rio Rancho Police Department spokesperson Lt. Jacquelynn Reedy, who was at the site.

“Officers — as they were investigating — a male exited and ran towards the vehicle that was in question. The suspect entered the vehicle on the driver’s side and was able to retrieve a handgun and began shooting at our officers,” she said. “Our officers retreated and began exchanging gunfire, at which time the suspect and his female accomplice fled southbound into Albuquerque.”

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous and was still at large as of 10:30 a.m.

No officers were injured as they exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

On its Facebook site, the police department described the vehicle as a blue Honda Civic with a stolen NM Chile Plate ATLS48. There is also a picture of the suspect and the vehicle.

Anyone who has information on the incident is asked to call 911.

From the Facebook posting: “RRPD asks for your cooperation in avoiding the area of Walmart located at 901 Unser Blvd. due to an Officer Involved Shooting. The public is asked to be on the lookout for a stolen, blue 2019 Honda Civic bearing NM plate ATLS84. The occupant is ARMED & DANGEROUS! Please contact law enforcement if you have any information regarding this case.”
