The Rio Rancho Observer recently published an editorial claiming that the City of Rio Rancho might have breached the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA). The newspaper also mentioned filing a complaint with the New Mexico Department of Justice/Attorney General’s Office.

In response, the City of Rio Rancho released a letter received on March 12, 2025, from the NMDOJ. This letter was also sent to the editor of the Observer newspaper. It addresses the complaint filed by the Observer's editor.

According to the investigation conducted by NMDOJ, "in response to multiple Observer IPRA requests for several weeks of arrest records," it was found that "the City of Rio Rancho’s staff did not violate the law/IPRA and responded appropriately and within the timelines prescribed by the law."
