Rio Rancho motor vehicle office set to close permanently on December 27

The motor vehicle office in Rio Rancho, located at 4114 Sabana Grande Ave. SE, will permanently close on December 27, 2024. The last opportunity to schedule appointments online or by phone (505-891-5014) is December 20, 2024.

The City of Rio Rancho has managed this office for the State of New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department – New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) under a contract agreement. The closure is attributed to several factors: insufficient revenue from service and contract fees to cover annual operating costs, declining usage and transactions, significant staff retirements, increased availability of online motor vehicle services, the presence of privately-operated motor vehicle service offices in Rio Rancho and nearby areas, and government-operated offices close to Rio Rancho.

Motor vehicle services are accessible through the State of New Mexico MVD website at mvd.newmexico.gov. Additionally, the state operates an MVD office at 9651 Eagle Ranch Road NW in Albuquerque, less than 2.5 miles from Rio Rancho's city limits. For appointments and further information about this office, visit mvd.newmexico.gov or call 505-764-6650. A self-service MVD kiosk for registration and license plate sticker renewals is also available at Smith’s located at 4800 McMahon Blvd. NW in Albuquerque.

Bernalillo town manages an MVD office for the state at 829 S. Camino Del Pueblo in Bernalillo, approximately three miles from Rio Rancho's city limits. Information about this location can be found at tobnm.gov or by calling 505-867-3311.

The State of New Mexico collaborates with private operators for motor vehicle services provision. MVD Express has multiple locations including one in Rio Rancho (4000 Southern Blvd.). More details are available at mvdexpress.com or by calling 505-294-1732. Other operators like MVD Now (mvdnow.com or 505-341-2MVD) and Rapid MVD (rapidmvd.com or 505-899-8883) have sites on Albuquerque’s westside and/or in Bernalillo.
