A groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Placitas Community Library in Bernalillo, New Mexico, marking the start of a solar panel expansion project. The initiative is valued at $108,000 and aims to reduce utility costs for the library. PPC Solar has been contracted for the project, which is expected to be completed by early spring.

The expansion is largely funded by a grant secured by State Representative Matthew McQueen from District 50. "Libraries are the hub of a community," said McQueen. He explained that $83,000 of the $100,000 grant will go towards the solar panels, with additional funds allocated for a new printer and website redesign.

Wayne Johnson, County Manager for Sandoval County, highlighted the significance of this development following last year's building expansion. "This is an example of a great public-private partnership," he stated. Johnson emphasized their shared commitment to energy conservation and resource stewardship.

Lynnette Fields, Board President for Placitas Community Library, expressed gratitude towards Representative McQueen and Sandoval County's Public Works Facilities Division. "We so appreciate Representative McQueen for his support of our library and the community we serve," she said.

The Placitas Community Library serves around 5,000 residents in rural Sandoval County and operates with a part-time director and administrator alongside over 85 volunteers. Since opening in May 2009 at its current location on Highway 165, it has become a center for educational and cultural activities.
