From January 6, 2023 post.
For the fifth season in a row, and sixth time in the past seven seasons, a football player from a city high school has been named the Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico.
This time, it’s Cleveland High senior quarterback Evan Wysong, following in his older brother Luke’s footsteps, not only to play football at the University of New Mexico, but also as a Gatorade POY.
In its 38th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, Gatorade today (Jan. 6) announced Evan Wysong of Cleveland High School is the 2022 Gatorade New Mexico Football Player of the Year.
Wysong is the fifth Gatorade New Mexico Football Player of the Year to be chosen from Cleveland High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Wysong as New Mexico’s best high school football player.
The 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior quarterback led the Storm to an 11-2 record and the Class 6A state championship this past season.
Wysong passed for 2,004 yards and 28 touchdowns, and also rushed for 1,289 yards and 15 TDs. He ran for 247 yards and three scores on the ground and passed for another TD in Cleveland’s 75-61 win over La Cueva High School in the 6A championship game.
He concluded his prep football career with 47 touchdown passes and 30 rushing TDs.
Wysong has volunteered locally as part of multiple fundraising campaigns to benefit cancer research. He has also donated his time at an elderly care facility and as a youth football coach.
“Evan is a one-of-a-kind player,” said Robert Garza, first-year head coach of the Storm. “The command that he brings to our offense is very unique. He always works his hardest in practice and has been nothing but a bright spot for our team. What Evan brings to the table is special.”
Wysong has maintained a weighted 3.04 GPA in the classroom.
He is a signee of the University of New Mexico football team.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
