Only One City Team Wins In Metro First Round

The Cleveland High School boys’ basketball team had four players score in double figures Tuesday in its 81-58 victory over Hope Christian in the first round of the annual APS Metro Basketball Championships.

The city’s three other teams lost and play in their respective consolation brackets in tip-offs at 5:30 p.m. today (Jan. 4).

Remy Albrecht led the Storm boys with 17 points, while Nic Trujillo (with 13), Noah Padilla (11) and Elijah McNeill (10) were also in double figures.

The Storm (10-2) meet Highland, a 63-51 winner over host Manzano, in the Manzano gym at 7:15 this evening.

ELSEWHERE

The Rio Rancho boys (8-5) fell to host La Cueva, 71-68, in overtime and meet Albuquerque in the La Cueva gym today at 5:30. The Rams beat the Bulldogs 63-53 at Bulldog City on Dec. 7 .

The Rio Rancho girls (7-5) were victims of a 21-2 onslaught by Hobbs in the second quarter and lost to the Eagles, 64-37, at Cibola.  Julia Espinosa  led the Rams with 11 points. The Rams meet the Cougars today at 5:30 — where Rams coach Lori Mabrey had been the head coach after leaving her post as a Rams assistant. Cibola lost to La Cueva, 57-28, in Tuesday’s other game.

The Cleveland girls (9-5) were defeated by West Mesa, 50-44, at Eldorado High School.  Aaliyah Ayanniyi led the Storm with 13 and Savannah Madueno chipped in with 10. The Storm meet Santa Fe today at 5:30 at Eldorado; the Demonettes were trounced by Eldorado, 49-29. Cleveland beat Santa Fe, 43-39, in the Thunderdome on Dec. 20.
