From December 7, 2022 post.
In honor and respect of Sergeant Robert Baron, Sandoval County will be flying its flags at half-mast.
On December 5, 2013, Sergeant Baron had been dispatched to I-25 in response to reports of multiple, minor motor vehicle crashes and disabled vehicles under blizzard conditions. He was fatally injured when a passing motorist lost control of his vehicle and slid onto the shoulder, striking Sergeant Baron. After stabilization by fire and rescue personnel at the scene, Sergeant Baron was transported to a nearby Level 1 trauma center, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Sergeant Robert Baron had been a law enforcement officer for 25 years. He joined the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office in 2006 and in April 2009 he was promoted to detective. He was then promoted to sergeant in November 2013. He had been back in the field for about 2 weeks when the incident occurred.
Sergeant Baron was known for having strong moral principles. He was caring, honest, dependable, dedicated and sincere. On the lighter side, he was sometimes quick to say the wrong thing and put his foot in his mouth in an innocent way. When he had a police story to tell it always centered on his days working for the National Park Police at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, a fact he was continually ribbed about in fun.
