Watermelon Mountain Ranch Adopts Out 50 Pets

From November 28, 2022 post.

During the National Adoption Week (Nov. 7-13) hosted by Petsmart and Watermelon Mountain Ranch no-kill animal shelter, 50 pets were adopted.

“We were so excited to see so many of our pets find ‘furever’ homes,” Watermelon Mountain Ranch Executive Director Sara Heffern said.

Heffern said that even pets in their senior years were adopted.

Many older pets lost their home when their owner passed away.

“They are often overlooked in a traditional shelter by people wanting to adopt, because of their age,” Heffern said.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, approximately 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year.

There is a 25 percent adoption rate for older dogs. For puppies and younger dogs, the rate is 60 percent.

The society says many people also get rid of a dog once it reaches maturity.

For cats, the rates are slightly better, with kittens being adopted 82 percent of the time and older cats being adopted 60 percent of the time.
