UPDATE: The Journal has confirmed Saturday night’s New Mexico State University Aggies vs. University of New Mexico Lobos men’s basketball game in the Pit, which was expected to draw about 15,000 fans, has been postponed as a result of the overnight homicide on UNM’s campus.
A player from NMSU — junior forward Mike Peake — was involved in the incident, but two sources have confirmed he was not the person killed and police have not confirmed what his involvement was.
UNM has issued the following statement on the game:
“In light of the tragic incident earlier this morning on the University of New Mexico campus, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University have jointly decided to postpone this evening’s men’s basketball contest between the schools.
“Details regarding a potential rescheduled contest and information on refunds will be forthcoming.
“Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this tragedy.”

Authorities say one person was shot to death early Saturday morning near a student residence hall on the University of New Mexico campus.
Albuquerque Police Department officers responded to a request for assistance from UNM’s police force shortly after 3 a.m.
“One individual has succumbed to gunshot injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene,” said Officer Chase Jewell, an APD spokesman.
The university issued two “urgent” alerts overnight, the first one at 3:30 a.m. notifying the campus community of an ongoing police investigation on the main campus and the second one at 4:15 a.m. saying there was no continuing threat to the UNM community.
“APD investigating a shooting near the round-about of Alvarado Hall,” the alert said. “No continuing threat to campus. Continue to avoid area.”
Jewell stressed that it was not an active shooter situation.
“This is a singular incident, and no dangers are mentioned to pose a risk to students on campus,” Jewell said in an email.
State Police has since taken over the investigation, he later added, although APD detectives remain on the scene to provide assistance.
