Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office issued the following announcement on June 18.
The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office has a new K9 Unit that goes into effect this week.
This new unit consists of two Sandoval County Sheriff’s Deputies Luke Osborn, with K9 Maverick Baron Harris and Deputy A.J. Noriega with K9 Candice.
Both K9 officers are part of an initiative that the Sheriff’s Office has been working on to try and crackdown on narcotics in Sandoval County.
This new unit will also work in tandem with the Rio Rancho Police Department and provide support in several law enforcement scenarios.
K9 Maverick Baron Harris has already been used to locate and save a lost hiker in the Sandia Mountain Foothills.
The Sheriff’s Office was able to obtain the dogs at no cost to the department, which has helped get the program off the ground.
K9 Maverick was given to the department by Hometown Foundation and K9 Candice was brought in by Deputy Noriega. Both dogs are fully certified and have been training for months so that they would be ready to hit the streets when the time came.
Sandoval County Sheriff Jesse James Casaus said this is the first canine unit in Sandoval County history.
“I am proud that we were able to get a canine unit, which is something no other administration had even attempted in the past,” Casaus said.
