A petition for release of Sandoval County Detention Center’s nonviolent and misdemeanor inmates due to coronavirus concerns has been canceled.

The request was filed March 19 in the 13th Judicial District Court to protect inmates and staff from COVID-19, according to the nmpoliticalreport.com. The petition called for the center to "release all misdemeanor and nonviolent offenders and refuse to admit any additional misdemeanor and nonviolent offenders during this period of State of Emergency."

Sandoval County Attorney Robin Hammer filed a motion to dismiss the petition she had previously filed March 19 because the inmate population at the center is at acceptable levels, reported KOB4 News. The center housed 208 inmates when Hammer filed the request, the Albuquerque Journal said.

As of March 28, there were 120 total inmates, according to https:www.sandovalcountynm.gov (“Detention Center”).

The number of inmates housed at the center was mainly reduced by moving detainees to other facilities..
