A developer is seeking a zone change in the town of Placitas to build townhouses for individuals who want more modest, affordable homes in the area.
Homestead Development Co. owns land in Placitas and was contacted by a builder for the construction of one-story townhomes. The property is just west of the Homestead Village Shopping Center, according to KRQE.
The news agency reported that Homestead's president, Orville McCallister, applied for the required zoning change in October.
Neighbors have said they do not want the townhouses to be built in the town, which is known for its expensive homes and beautiful views, the news agency reported.
The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended to Sandoval County commissioners that they deny the request. The commissioners were scheduled to vote on the matter Feb. 25.
The Planning and Zoning Commission said in online documents that the request was "not consistent" with the Placitas Area Plan. The Placitas Area Plan only allows for commercial use on the property in question.
