Property tax collection in Sandoval County is at 99.38 percent, according to county treasurer Laura Montoya.
Each year since the beginning of her term in 2013, Montoya and her team have been able to increase the collection rate even though the tax rolls have grown.
"This is important because the more we collect from everyone, the more fair and equitable the tax base is and the lower taxes can stay," she said.
Montoya has also had considerable success managing the county's investments. Interest earned on all Sandoval County bank investments in 2019 amount to more than $1 million. She says she worked with New Mexico Bank & Trust and the New Mexico State Local Government Investment Pool, and also made other direct investments.
“Considering the market environment we were in and not having a portfolio manager for the 2019 fiscal year, a significant rate of return was earned with safety at the forefront,” Montoya said.
