City of Rio Rancho issued the following announcement on May 7.
Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull is recommending the creation of a Rio Rancho Business Community and Economic Recovery Task Force to study and make recommendations to the Governing Body on actions and plans for the near- and long-term health and recovery of the local economy from COVID-19. The approval of the task force will go before the Rio Rancho Governing Body at the May 13, 2020 City Council Meeting.
In 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, federal, state, and local emergencies have been declared. Since March 2020, and in the interest of health, safety, and welfare, orders have been issued by New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Department of Health that necessitated the closure of many businesses, and greatly impacted the operations of other businesses.
“The current and lasting economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be overstated,” said Mayor Hull. “I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and working with the task force to start building a more diverse and resilient local economy for a post COVID-19 future.”
In response to a call for applications announcement in April, Mayor Hull received sixty-three applications from business owners, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and community-minded Rio Rancho residents for the Rio Rancho Business Community and Economic Recovery Task Force. Subject to approval by the Governing Body on May 13, the task force will consist of up to nine members with one seat per City Council district, three at-large seats, and the Mayor serving as chair.
From the large, diverse pool of applicants, the Mayor has selected the following citizens to serve on the task force:
• District 1—Fred Shepherd
• District 2—Dr. Robert Grassberger
• District 3—David Torres
• District 4—Kristelle Siarza
• District 5—Sarah Baiett
• District 6—Teresa Curl
• At-large—Micaela Brown
• At-large—Robert Gabaldon
• At-large—Ed Smith
Non-residents and subject-matter experts will be invited to attend and participate in meetings based on the published agenda for the meetings. All meetings will be open to the public, notified, follow open meeting protocols and conduct business pursuant to the State of New Mexico’s Open Meetings Act provision. The creation of the task force is enabled by Rio Rancho Municipal Code.
