The shootout between a New Mexico State University basketball player and a University of New Mexico student on UNM’s campus early Saturday morning started as a plot to get revenge for a fight that happened at a football game in Las Cruces over a month earlier, according to court documents.
Mike Peake, the 21-year-old player from NMSU, was shot in the leg. Brandon Travis, the 19-year-old UNM student, was killed. Two people have been arrested, including a 17-year-old girl who was booked into the juvenile detention center and 19-year-old Jonathan Smith, who was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center early Monday morning.Jonathan Smith, 19 (MDC)Smith is charged with aggravated battery, conspiracy and tampering with evidence.According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Smith told New Mexico State Police detectives that he, Travis, and Travis’s roommate were at the Oct. 15 game between NMSU and UNM in Las Cruces when they “got into a fight and got jumped.”He said they knew one of the people they had fought against was Peake. So when Mya Hill, a girl they knew, told them she had been talking with Peake the group hatched a plan for her to lure him to campus, according to the affidavit.Peake told detectives he took an Uber to the campus.When Peake and Hill were walking by the Coronado Hall complex, Smith said the group went to confront them.“Brandon pointed a gun at Michael’s face,” the detective wrote in the affidavit. “(Travis’s roommate) then hit Michael in his leg with the bat. Michael took off running and began to reach near his waist area. Michael than pulled out a gun and shot towards Brandon and Brandon fired back. Jonathan and (Travis’s roommate) took off running.”Smith told detectives he knew his friend had a gun but hadn’t known he was going to bring it with him.Hill told detectives she left the scene when she heard what she thought were gunshots before throwing up in the bathroom because she was drunk.The two young men called 911 and pressed a campus call button for help. Then they ditched their phones and changed clothes, throwing them into a sewer near campus. Then they went back to campus and saw that Travis was dead.“They blended into the crowd and watched as police tried to help Brandon,” the detective wrote. “Jonathan stated while they were in the crowd (Travis’s roommate) grabbed a male and pinned him up against the wall because he was laughing while they were watching Brandon. Jonathan pulled (Travis’s roommate) off the male, and they left.”Travis’s roommate has not been charged.
