SCAM ALERT!

Sheriff Jesse James Casaus and the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Thanksgiving. During the holiday season, we would like to remind everyone to be safe, which includes your finances.

We have recently discovered that scammers are calling random people and advising them that they have failed to show up for Grand Jury or some other type of hearing. Because of this they now have a warrant. They then ask for you to purchase gift cards and supply them with the number off of the back of the cards. They will stay on the phone with you the whole time until you purchase the cards and give them the card number. They will then tell you that once you pay, the warrant will be dismissed.

This is all false. Our Sheriff’s office, including any other Law enforcement agency, will never call you to tell you that you have a warrant for your arrest. They will never ask you to buy gift cards to pay the agency and will not ask you to pay anything over the phone. These are all scams in an attempt to scare you and make you think that this is very real.

Some actions that you can take is to tell them that you will call your local police and verify this information. Verify a phone number and never give any personal information to them, including financial information.  No matter what situation they tell you, always call to verify. Case in point, we had a victim contact us and advised that they told her that a relative was in a bad accident in another state and that they needed money down to start emergency surgery. This all turned out to be a scam.

If you are a victim of a scam you can report it to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) at 1-877-382-4357. If you have any questions about these types of calls, please contact us.
